Commemorating the Return of St. John Chrysostom’s Holy Relics

January 27th marks the return of Saint John Chrysostom’s holy relics to Constantinople, a momentous occasion of profound spiritual significance for Orthodox Christians. Exiled in 403 AD for bravely condemning corruption and abuse of power, this revered Church Father died far from home in 407 AD. His influence, however, continued to resonate

Thirty-one years later, in 438 AD, Emperor Theodosius II, seeking to atone for his parents’ persecution of the saint, ordered Chrysostom’s relics brought back to Constantinople from Comana. The procession was a spectacle of reverence, marked by miraculous events. Initially placed in the Hagia Irene, the incorrupt remains were later transferred to the Church of the Holy Apostles.

Tradition holds that Chrysostom’s body miraculously spoke the words, “Peace be to all,” a powerful symbol of forgiveness and reconciliation. This event stands as a testament to the transformative power of repentance and divine grace within the Orthodox faith.

Prayer to St. John Chrysostom:

O Holy Father John Chrysostom, golden-mouthed proclaimer of Christ’s truth and courageous defender of righteousness, intercede on our behalf before God’s throne. Grant us your wisdom, ignite within us your courage, and instruct us in loving the Lord with all our heart, mind, and soul. Compassionate shepherd, pray that we may walk the path of repentance and holiness, glorifying God in all we do. Amen.
