The island of Crete is reeling from a horrifying case of child abuse that has left a 3-year-old boy fighting for his life in critical condition.
The boy, who was rushed to the hospital in Theriso with severe injuries, is now intubated in the Pediatric ICU at Pagni Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.
Doctors discovered that the child suffered from head trauma, bruises, cigarette burns, a ruptured abdominal aorta, and multiple injuries indicative of prolonged abuse. Medical staff described the situation as one of the worst cases they had encountered, with wounds of varying ages pointing to systematic violence.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
The police have arrested the 26-year-old mother of the boy and her 44-year-old partner, charging them with attempted murder, causing bodily harm to a vulnerable person, illegal weapons possession, and drug possession. The couple is expected to appear before a prosecutor today.
During a search of the couple’s home, authorities seized a wooden bat, sticks from the broken crib, and other items believed to have been used to inflict harm on the child. Additionally, they found a shotgun and an air rifle.
Police sources report that the mother appeared apathetic during her arrest, showing no concern for her child’s condition. Her partner, who has a history of domestic threats from three years ago, is also under scrutiny, though it remains unclear who directly committed the abuse.
The abuse came to light when a 17-year-old neighbour heroically intervened to save the boy’s life. After finding the child bleeding and slipping in and out of consciousness, the teenager performed CPR and managed to revive him until emergency services arrived.
Neighbours were horrified to learn of the abuse, as none had suspected the ongoing torture the boy endured. They described the situation as unimaginable, with no outward signs of what was happening behind closed doors.
The child’s condition remains critical as he continues to battle for his life in the hospital. Meanwhile, police are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the abuse and the roles of the mother and her partner.
