The Greek-Australian Society (GAS) has ushered in a new era with the election of a new Board during its virtual Annual General Meeting held on Monday, 20 January. This year's AGM was particularly significant as it included candidates from Adelaide and Canberra for the first time, reflecting the society's growing national presence.
Returning board members George Mpliokas, Bill Maloukis, Stella Drivas, and John Georgaklis were elected. They were joined by newcomers Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos from Melbourne, Paul Kaletsis from Canberra, and Sydney's Paul Kougias, Mersina Hristeff, and Arthur Sarlas. This new composition aims to steer GAS towards further inclusivity and community engagement.
The Consul-General of Greece in Sydney, Yannis Mallikourtis, commended GAS for its dynamic approach and commitment to engaging with the younger demographic of Greek Australians.
Angelica Spiliopoulos-Angsiting, co-president of NUGAS Victoria, expressed enthusiasm about expanding their social program and acknowledged GAS's pivotal role in fostering student initiatives.
The outgoing Board members Peter Dracakis, Eleni Tatsis, Apollonas Karakaidos, Constance Piperides, and George Psihoyios were thanked for their service, marking the end of a significant term.
Following the AGM, the newly elected Board members convened to elect their leadership, with George Mpliokas as the fourth President of GAS. Bill Maloukis, John Georgaklis, and Paul Kougias were appointed vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respectively.
George Mpliokas expressed his gratitude and commitment, stating, "Serving our Greek-Australian community has been one of the most rewarding endeavors of my life. I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve through GAS." He also thanked his wife, Gabriella, fellow co-founders, and all GAS members for their trust and support.
New Board member Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos said, "I’m excited to have been elected as a Board Member of GAS for the upcoming term. I’m passionate about inspiring future generations to connect with and celebrate Greek culture."
Paul Kaletsis, another new member, emphasized the importance of community and professional development, "I look forward to working with the Board to celebrate and promote Greek culture here in Canberra and across Australia. I am excited to support fellow young Greek Australians who are early in their careers."
This election marks a pivotal moment for GAS, which continues to unite and empower Greek-Australians, fostering a sense of community and cultural pride across the nation.
