The crime took place when the woman, pretending to be a third party, contacted the elderly man and falsely claimed that his son had caused a fatal car accident involving a foreign national. Exploiting the man’s emotional distress, the fraudster pressured him into paying a large sum of money to avoid legal consequences for his son.
On the pretext of helping, the woman arranged a meeting with the elderly man and received €35,000 in cash.
The victim reported the scam to local authorities, prompting immediate action from police. Officers quickly located the woman at Kos port as she attempted to leave the island. In her possession, they found €33,000, which was seized and will be returned to the victim.
The woman is now in custody and will face charges in front of the Kos Prosecutor’s Office. Police continue their investigation to uncover the full extent of the scheme and identify any other individuals involved.
