The President of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), Mr. Bill Papastergiadis OAM, recently welcomed the new Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Ms. Dimitra Georgantzioglou, in a meeting that highlighted the enduring ties between Greece and its diaspora.

The meeting, held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, centered on enhancing the support for Melbourne’s dynamic Greek community. Discussions emphasised the importance of maintaining strong connections with Greece and ensuring high-quality consular services for Greeks living abroad.

Ms. Georgantzioglou, who has recently taken up her role, expressed her commitment to serving the Greek diaspora in Melbourne. “It is a great honour to assume my duties in a city with such a passionate and active Greek community,” she said. “Providing efficient and accessible services to Greeks abroad is a top priority, and collaboration with the Greek Community of Melbourne is essential to achieving these goals.”

She also highlighted the ongoing digital transformation of consular services, which aims to streamline procedures and make public services more accessible to Greeks worldwide.

Mr. Papastergiadis reiterated the GCM’s dedication to fostering strong ties with Greece. “The GCM is proud of its collaboration with the Consulate General and the vital support it provides to the diaspora. With Ms. Georgantzioglou at the helm, I am confident we will launch new initiatives that promote unity and prosperity for Greeks in Melbourne,” he stated.

The meeting also served as an opportunity for Mr. Papastergiadis to brief the Consul General on the community’s upcoming events, including the highly anticipated 2025 “Antipodes” Festival on February 22–23 and the traditional celebrations of Greek Independence Day on March 25.

Both parties pledged to work closely to address challenges facing the diaspora and to further strengthen the relationship of trust and collaboration between Melbourne’s Greek community and Greek authorities.
