Google announced that it will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” on its Maps, following a directive from the Trump administration via “official government sources.” The company also stated it will start using the name “Mount McKinley” for the mountain in Alaska currently known as Denali.
Last week, President Donald Trump signed executive orders mandating these name changes on official maps and in federal communications.
“We’ve received some questions about the naming within Google Maps,” the company said in a statement. “We have a long-standing practice of implementing name changes when they have been reported in official government sources.” Google added that the name Gulf of Mexico will continue to appear for users in Mexico. Users in other countries will see both names, the company confirmed. Trump remarked that he would restore former President William McKinley’s name to the mountain, citing McKinley’s contributions to the country’s wealth through tariffs and his talent. The mountain was named Mount McKinley until 2015, when the Obama administration changed it to Denali as a symbolic gesture towards Alaska Natives.
