Patras: University Student Dies Within Hours from Meningitis, EODY Team Mobilised

A team from Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) has been deployed to Patras following the tragic death of a 20-year-old university student from fulminant meningitis.

The student, who was being treated at the University Hospital, succumbed to the infection within hours of showing symptoms.

Rapid Onset of the Infection
The victim, identified as Socrates, attended classes as usual on Monday before suddenly feeling unwell at home. His twin sister, noticing his fever, severe fatigue, and the appearance of a rash, took him to the emergency room. He was diagnosed with meningitis, intubated, and transferred to the ICU. Despite doctors’ efforts, his condition deteriorated at an alarming speed, and he passed away early Tuesday, less than a day after first feeling unwell.

Mother’s Heartbreaking Statement
“It was molecular meningitis. Its progression was incredibly fast. His sister noticed the symptoms and insisted he go to the hospital. He hadn’t even slept properly because he had an exam the day before,” his mother told ANT1.

Preventive Measures and Chemoprophylaxis
University authorities have taken immediate health precautions, postponing examinations and initiating contact tracing. Around 40 students who attended class with Socrates on Monday, as well as the professor who examined him, have been given preventive chemoprophylaxis.

Previous Cases in Patras
This is not the first meningitis case in the region. In December 2024, a 16-year-old student, Nefeli, succumbed to meningococcal type B after prolonged hospitalisation. Additionally, three university students were diagnosed with meningitis in March 2024, prompting an earlier EODY intervention.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasising the importance of early detection and vaccination against meningococcal infections.
