While Brazilian women are often celebrated for their curves, the study revealed that South African women lead with an average hip size of 41.73 inches, surpassing Argentina (41 inches) and Sweden (40.9 inches).
Greece also made the top five, ranking fourth with an average hip size of 40.74 inches, closely followed by Germany in fifth place at 40.6 inches.
Interestingly, the United States did not make the top five despite its rising obesity rates. The research suggests that genetics, obesity prevalence, bone structure, and plastic surgery trends may explain the variations in hip sizes across countries.
The study also highlighted potential health risks linked to larger hip sizes. Recent research suggests that larger waist circumferences—often correlated with bigger hips—could increase the risk of colon cancer. About 17% of colon cancer cases are linked to high waist circumference, affecting roughly one in six individuals.
Experts have noted that larger hips and buttocks have evolutionary significance. Dr. Darcy Shapiro, an anthropologist at Rutgers University, explained that humans developed larger backsides due to bipedal walking. Studies also suggest that men historically found larger hips attractive as they signaled youth, fertility, and better pregnancy support.
While the GitNux study provides intriguing insights, it comes with limitations. Brazil, a country often associated with curvaceous figures, was notably absent from the data. Additionally, the methodology behind the rankings was not disclosed, leaving room for further analysis.
Whether shaped by genetics, diet, or cultural influences, hip size remains a topic of fascination globally, revealing both aesthetic trends and underlying health concerns.
