A 3-year-old boy, Angelos, remains in extremely critical condition after suffering severe abuse at the hands of his mother and her partner.

The child is currently hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit at Heraklion University Hospital (PAGNI), where he is being treated with life-saving measures, including intubation.

The head of PAGNI, Emeritus Professor of Surgery Giorgos Chalkiadakis, expressed concerns about Angelos’s prognosis, emphasising the uncertainty surrounding his condition. “We don’t yet know if the child is brain dead,” Chalkiadakis stated. “The increased intracranial pressure is a serious concern, and we are following protocols to assess his brain function. Once we have the results of all necessary tests, we will have more clarity.”

Angelos was admitted to the hospital on January 26, 2025, with traumatic injuries, including a subdural hematoma, multiple bruises, abrasions, lacerations, and burns. These injuries span several time periods, further alarming medical professionals.

A preliminary forensic examination has painted a grim picture. According to the coroner’s report, the injuries sustained by Angelos are so severe that survival is unlikely. The details of the abuse described in the forensic report have shocked the public, as the child’s suffering appears to have been prolonged and systematic.

Meanwhile, Angelos’s mother, 26-year-old Maria, and her 44-year-old partner, Giorgos, have been taken into custody. Both individuals have been blamed for the child’s condition but are reportedly pointing fingers at each other. Following their statements to the authorities, both were remanded in prison while investigations continue.

This case has sparked widespread outrage across Greece, with many calling for justice for Angelos and an examination of the systems that failed to protect him.
