Greece and the United Kingdom have formalised their collaboration in the maritime sector with the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in the field of merchant shipping.
The agreement, which focuses on sustainable growth, green shipping, and the development of human resources in maritime transport, was signed during a high-level meeting in London.
Greek Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Christos Stylianides, and the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, convened at the IMO headquarters to discuss pressing issues affecting international shipping. Among the topics discussed were the strengthening of the maritime profession, the geopolitical challenges influencing global shipping, and the ongoing efforts to implement the IMO’s strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Stylianides and Dominguez expressed their shared commitment to addressing the critical issues facing the shipping industry and reiterated Greece’s full support for the IMO’s initiatives. They also affirmed their mutual interest in ensuring the continued development of maritime transport on a global scale.
The Greek minister, during his visit, also met with Mike Kane, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport in the UK, further highlighting the long-standing cooperation between the two nations in maritime affairs.
The MoU includes provisions for the exchange of expertise, the organization of conferences and educational activities, and the promotion of private-sector participation in tackling challenges faced by the international shipping community. Additionally, it aims to improve maritime safety, safeguard the marine environment, and facilitate the efficient functioning of the shipping industry.
