Maria Sakkari kicked off her WTA Linz campaign with a dominant performance, securing a spot in the quarter-finals after defeating Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets.

Sakkari Advances to Linz Quarter-Finals

Maria Sakkari (ranked 31st) made a strong debut at the WTA 500 tournament in Linz, bouncing back from a slow start to the season. The Greek player had managed only one victory in 2025 and was coming off a disappointing first-round exit at the Australian Open against Colombia’s Camila Osorio. As the third seed, Sakkari faced 64th-ranked Viktoriya Tomova, who had advanced after a hard-fought win over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas. Sakkari held a perfect 3-0 record against Tomova, with their most recent encounter taking place in Charleston in 2024.

A Strong Start

Sakkari asserted her dominance early, holding serve with confidence and applying relentless pressure on Tomova’s return games. She quickly secured a break, going up 3-0 as she fine-tuned her execution and bolstered her defense. Despite Tomova’s efforts to counter, Sakkari remained in control, efficiently dictating play to claim the first set 6-3.

Sakkari Seals Victory with Commanding Play

In the second set, Sakkari broke Tomova’s serve in the third game, setting the tone for a one-sided finish. She continued to unleash powerful returns, leaving her opponent struggling for answers. With a second break soon following, Sakkari maintained her aggressive pace, dictating rallies and controlling the tempo. She closed out the match in dominant fashion, securing a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory.

With this win, Sakkari moves into the Linz quarter-finals, determined to build momentum and regain her best form.
