A 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Aliveri, Evia, on Thursday evening, sending tremors across the region and causing concern among residents.
The earthquake, which occurred shortly before 6:00 PM, was also felt in several areas of Attica. However, Efthymis Lekkas, President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) and Professor of Natural Disaster Management, has sought to reassure the public, stating that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Seismic Activity in an Undersea Area
According to Mr. Lekkas, the earthquake originated from a rupture in a submarine area near Aliveri. “At this stage, there are no reports of damage, but the authorities are closely monitoring the situation,” he told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (APE-MPA).
Addressing why the earthquake was particularly felt in Attica, Mr. Lekkas explained that the region’s distance from the epicentre contributed to the prolonged shaking. He further noted that the affected area has historically experienced moderate seismic activity, and that it is crucial to observe the situation over the next 12 hours.
Expectation of Aftershocks
Speaking to local media, Mr. Lekkas emphasized that aftershocks are expected to follow. “It is too early to determine whether this was the main earthquake,” he told evima.gr. “We are analysing the fault that caused this event, as it does not seem to match known faults in the area.”
Residents in Aliveri described the earthquake as intense, with a loud rumbling noise preceding the tremors. “It had duration and a very strong roar. People were coming out of the shops in the pedestrian street of Aliveri,” one resident told evima.gr.
Schools Closed as a Precaution
In response to the earthquake, the Municipality of Kimi Aliveri has announced the closure of all schools on Friday, January 31, 2025. The decision affects all educational institutions, including kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, and high schools.
“The closure will allow for further assessment of the situation and ensure the safety of students and staff,” the municipal announcement stated.
Monitoring Continues
Authorities remain vigilant as they assess the earthquake’s impact and potential aftershocks. While no damage has been reported so far, seismologists continue to study the fault responsible for the tremor. The epicenter was located approximately 3 kilometres west-southwest of Aliveri, at a focal depth of 16.2 kilometres.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow safety guidelines in the event of further seismic activity.
