Princess Beatrice Chooses Greek Name for Baby Girl

Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, have joyfully announced the birth of their second daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose. The baby girl was born on 22 January 2025 at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. Despite arriving several weeks early, both mother and baby are reported to be healthy and doing well.

The couple expressed their gratitude to the hospital staff for their exceptional care during this special time. Edoardo shared his excitement on social media, writing: “Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi. We welcomed Baby Athena into our lives last week. She is tiny and absolutely perfect. We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her.” He also added, “Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena. A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time.”

The Meaning Behind Athena’s Name

The name Athena holds profound significance. In Greek mythology, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft, revered for her strategic prowess and intelligence. She was the patron deity of Athens, a city named in her honour, and her symbols include the owl and the olive tree.

Choosing a Greek name for their daughter also carries a meaningful connection to Princess Beatrice’s heritage. Her late grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on the Greek island of Corfu. By naming their daughter Athena, the couple pays tribute to this lineage, honouring the family’s Greek roots.

A Royal Tribute to Family

Athena Elizabeth Rose joins her older sister, Sienna Elizabeth, born in September 2021, and half-brother Christopher Woolf, known as Wolfie, from Edoardo’s previous relationship with architect Dara Huang. Her middle name Elizabeth is believed to honour Beatrice’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, reflecting the family’s deep respect and affection for the former monarch.

The royal family, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, have expressed their delight at the new arrival. Athena is now 11th in line to the British throne, following her sister Sienna.

The choice of the name Athena not only honours familial heritage but also embodies qualities of wisdom and strength, virtues that are timeless and universally admired. As Beatrice and Edoardo settle into life with their newborn daughter, the royal family and the public alike celebrate the arrival of this newest member of the monarchy.
