A 55-year-old Turkish citizen was detained in a maritime area near Alexandroupolis, Greece, for importing, smuggling, transporting, possessing, and storing weapons and ammunition intended for sale for criminal activities. During a search of his vessel, authorities found sixty-one firearms of various calibers and types, including handguns, pistols, revolvers, and silencers, along with accessories and 2,916 rounds of military-grade ammunition.
The incident began on January 28th at noon when the Alexandroupolis Port Authority received a report of a motorboat with a foreign occupant drifting aimlessly off the coast. A Coast Guard patrol boat responded, rescuing the individual and bringing him safely ashore.
The man was then transported to the University General Hospital of Evros, where he remains hospitalized under guard. The seized weapons and the vessel are undergoing further investigation and forensic analysis. The Central Port Authority of Alexandroupolis is conducting an inquiry into the matter.
