Greece has welcomed the UN Security Council’s unanimous decision to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus for another year.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry emphasized that the resolution sends a strong message of support for the UN Secretary-General’s efforts to revive negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue. Greece reaffirmed its commitment to a solution based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, as outlined in UN resolutions.
In coordination with the Republic of Cyprus, Athens played an active role in discussions leading up to the mandate renewal. As Greece prepares to assume a seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, it underscored the importance of the peacekeeping mission in reducing tensions and ensuring stability on the island.
The ministry reiterated that resolving the Cyprus issue remains a top priority for Greek foreign policy and pledged to work constructively toward a fair and lasting solution within the framework of UN resolutions.
