A shocking crime has shaken the community of Nea Michaniona, Thessaloniki, where a 35-year-old man was arrested for the brutal killing of a 77-year-old man by setting him on fire.
The suspect was taken into custody on Sunday, January 2, by officers of the Organized Crime Sub-Division and now faces charges of manslaughter and arson.
The incident came to light when firefighters responding to a blaze at a detached house discovered the charred remains of the elderly victim. Investigations revealed that the two men had an ongoing dispute, reportedly stemming from a theft complaint filed by the 77-year-old against the suspect. The victim had accused the younger man of stealing his bank card.
Authorities believe that during an argument, the 35-year-old assaulted the elderly man before setting him on fire. Further evidence linked him to the crime when police discovered he had left his mobile phone at the scene.
The suspect was initially called in for questioning but later returned to the victim’s home, where the fatal attack took place. Police swiftly identified and apprehended him, and he is now facing serious charges as investigations continue.
