New Earthquake Near Anafi: The Aegean Remains Seismically Active – Santorini on Alert

The intense seismic activity in the Aegean continues, with frequent tremors around the island of Santorini.

According to the Geodynamic Institute’s automatic readings, a strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck a marine area 19 kilometres north-northwest of Anafi on Monday morning. The earthquake had a focal depth of 5.1 kilometres.

Shortly before this event, smaller tremors measuring 3.6, 3.1, and 3.6 on the Richter scale were also recorded.

A Surge of Earthquakes in the Cyclades

A series of earthquakes have been shaking the Cyclades region.

Another strong tremor was recorded on Monday morning (February 3) near Amorgos. According to the Geodynamic Institute, this earthquake had a focal depth of 119.7 kilometres and was centred 10 kilometres north-northwest of Arkesini, Amorgos. Two more earthquakes measuring 4.0 and 4.2 on the Richter scale struck the sea area near Anafi.

Seismologist Gerasimos Karastathis told SKAI News that 550 earthquakes have been recorded and analyzed over the past ten days, with 185 measuring above 3.0 on the Richter scale.

Emergency Meeting on Seismic Activity

An inter-ministerial meeting will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection to mobilize the state mechanism in response to the ongoing seismic activity in the wider Santorini area.

The meeting, convened by Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias, will be attended by representatives from Local Authorities, the Fire Brigade, the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the Coast Guard, the Armed Forces, the National Center for Emergency Assistance (EKAB), and other relevant organizations, including the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), HEDNOE, and the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE).
