Greece Installs Tide Gauge in Santorini for Tsunami Monitoring Amid Seismic Activity

The National Tsunami Warning Centre (NTWC) of the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens (GI/NAO) has installed a tide gauge on the northeastern coast of Santorini, following a period of heightened seismic activity between the islands of Santorini and Amorgos.

According to an official announcement on Tuesday, the installation was carried out in a small fishing shelter to closely monitor sea level fluctuations near the seismic epicentre. The NTWC also provided local authorities with educational material on its operations, along with self-protection guidelines in the event of a tsunami.

The move underscores Greece’s commitment to improving early warning systems in an area with a well-documented history of seismic and volcanic activity. Santorini, part of the Aegean Volcanic Arc, experienced one of history’s most significant eruptions around 1600 BCE, and the region remains geologically active.

Greek authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing that preparedness and rapid response measures are key to mitigating potential risks.
