STRASBOURG – In a fiery speech at the European Parliament plenary session, MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou of the “Voice of Reason” party laid the blame for the EU’s economic struggles squarely at the feet of socialist governments. Challenging the narrative of conservatives as a threat to European stability, Latinopoulou argued that 50 years of socialist rule have decimated industries and undermined competitiveness.
“Seriously, ladies and gentlemen?” she began, before launching a series of rhetorical questions. “Did the right destroy industry? Did the right idolize Greta Thunberg? Did the right impose green energy at the expense of industry, destroying the EU’s competitiveness?”
Latinopoulou pointed to France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and her native Greece as examples of countries “destroyed by unarmed socialist policies.” She then directly addressed her political opponents: “And today you, the destroyers of Europe, have the audacity to point fingers at us, saying that we conservatives are a threat to Europe? I’m laughing. I really am laughing.”
Invoking Margaret Thatcher’s famous critique of socialism, Latinopoulou urged a dramatic shift towards liberal economic policies. Her recommendations included:
- Tax reductions: To stimulate economic growth.
- Increased competitiveness: Though she did not elaborate on specific strategies.
- Reinstatement of plastic straws: A controversial proposal likely to draw criticism.
- Continued use of lignite: Rejecting the push for a rapid green transition.
- Investment in industry: As a key driver of economic recovery.
Concluding with a stark warning, Latinopoulou declared, “We are tomorrow and you are yesterday.” She implored her colleagues to “leave the ghosts of the so-called far right” and heed her party’s advice before it’s “too late for everyone.” Her provocative speech is expected to ignite further debate within the European Parliament.
