A chilling discovery unfolded in central Athens on Thursday afternoon when a man was found dead inside a short-term rental apartment in Omonia.
The grim scene was uncovered by the Airbnb property owner, who had arrived to clean the unit.
According to initial reports, the man was found on the bed, his hands and feet bound, with a plastic bag over his head. An oxygen tank was discovered nearby. Sources indicate he was a U.S. citizen, who had rented the second-floor apartment and was due to check out today. A neighbour reported seeing him entering the flat around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, 12 March, noting he appeared slightly intoxicated.
The area has been cordoned off, with a team from the Security Directorate and a coroner rushing to the scene to examine the body and determine whether foul play was involved. The building is equipped with an entrance camera, and authorities are expected to review the footage to clarify whether the man was alone and in what condition he was before entering the apartment.
