Tsitsipas Survives Thompson to Reach Monte Carlo Round of 16

Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas, the reigning champion, overcame a tough challenge from Australian Jordan Thompson in a thrilling match. After two hours and two minutes of intense play, Tsitsipas completed a comeback victory (4-6, 6-4, 6-2), securing his place in the round of 16 at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000.

The Greek player, who has faced struggles in recent months, continued his strong connection with the Monaco tournament, having won three of the last four editions. Tsitsipas, the current world number eight, has now won nineteen out of the twenty matches he’s played in Monaco. He had to dig deep to overcome Thompson, asserting his status as both the defending champion and the sixth seed.

Tsitsipas showed his dominance, claiming his fifth victory in six encounters against Thompson in this second-round clash. Tsitsipas, who won the 2025 Dubai title, has always been most comfortable on the clay of Monaco, a surface where he has excelled in the past.

In the next round, Tsitsipas will face the winner of the match between Portuguese Nuno Borges, who advanced to the second round after Danish player Holger Rune withdrew, and Spaniard Pedro Martínez, who defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.

In other results, American Frances Tiafoe advanced to the round of 16 after a hard-fought three-set victory over Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic (6-2, 5-7, 7-6(5)). He will face Australian Alexei Popyrin, who defeated Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

British player Jack Draper also made it to the round of 16 after a one-hour victory over American Marcos Giron. Draper will next face the winner of the match between Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich.
