Jerusalem, April 20, 2025 — The Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem issued a strong condemnation of violent incidents targeting pilgrims during the Holy Fire ceremony on Holy Saturday, April 19, 2025, in Jerusalem’s Old City. The attacks, which disrupted the sacred event at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, have drawn sharp criticism for undermining the city’s historic role as a beacon of peace.
In a press release, the Patriarchate described the actions of Israeli police forces as “shameful and profane,” accusing them of transforming Jerusalem into a “militarized zone.” According to the statement, authorities erected barriers that blocked worshippers from accessing holy sites and assaulted local and international pilgrims, including scouts. These actions, the Patriarchate said, deprived thousands of the faithful of their right to worship during one of the holiest days in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
Quoting the Gospel of Matthew, the Patriarchate invoked the words of Jesus: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9). It further cited Mark 11:17, emphasizing Jerusalem’s calling as a “house of prayer for all nations.” The statement called for the restoration of peace and justice in the Holy Land, including an end to conflict in Gaza.
The Patriarchate expressed hope that the light of the Resurrection would inspire justice, hope, and freedom across the region. “We lift our hearts to the Risen Lord, praying that His just peace may reign over this sacred land,” the statement concluded.
The Holy Fire ceremony, a centuries-old tradition, draws thousands of Orthodox Christians to Jerusalem each year to witness the miraculous lighting of the Holy Fire, symbolizing Christ’s resurrection. The Patriarchate’s statement underscores growing concerns over access to religious sites amid heightened security measures in the city.
