A 37-year-old refugee was arrested in central Athens on Friday night following a violent sexual assault on a group of three young women in the Exarchia neighborhood. The incident, which occurred around 22:00 at the intersection of Solonos and Charilaou Trikoupi streets, has sparked outrage after a disturbing video surfaced on social media.

The footage shows the suspect aggressively attacking the woman, aged 22, as they walked together. He grabbed one of the women by the hair, threw her to the pavement, and attempted to tear off her clothing while shouting the word “sex,” according to the victim’s statement to police. Her two friends tried desperately to intervene but were unable to stop the assailant.

The woman’s screams for help alerted a passerby, who subdued the attacker until police arrived. The suspect, identified as a political asylum recipient living in Greece, was arrested and now faces charges of attempted rape. He has been referred to the prosecutor and is scheduled to appear before an examining magistrate on Wednesday to provide his testimony.

The incident has raised concerns about safety in the Exarchia area, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.
