On the evening of Thursday, August 7, 2025, Metropolitan Dionysios of Corinth, aged 73, passed away after a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.

His death has deeply saddened the Corinthian community, where he leaves behind a profound legacy of spiritual leadership, philanthropy, and social engagement. Despite enduring significant health challenges in recent months and seeking treatment both in Greece and abroad, the beloved Hierarch faced his illness with remarkable fortitude and faith.

His tenure in Corinthia was marked by extensive charitable initiatives, support for youth and families, the establishment of spiritual institutions, vibrant catechetical work, and impactful contributions to the region’s social and spiritual life.

The funeral service will take place at the Holy Cathedral of the Apostle Paul in Corinth, attended by Hierarchs of the Church of Greece, clergy, local authorities, and a large gathering of faithful mourners.

Who Was Metropolitan Dionysios of Corinth?

Born in 1952 in Athens (Nea Psychiko), Metropolitan Dionysios graduated from the Theological School of Athens and pursued postgraduate studies in Christian Philosophy and Pedagogy at the University of Thessaloniki. Ordained as a Deacon in 1974 and a Priest in 1979, he held significant roles, including Preacher (1977), General Episcopal Commissioner (1978), and First Syncellus (1990) of the Holy Metropolis of Chalcis. He also served as Deputy General Director of Apostolic Diakonia (2002) and Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod (2006).

Dionysios was instrumental in founding 25 Spiritual Centers and modern camps in Ilia and Evia, as well as establishing Training Schools for catechists, camp leaders, and anti-heretical efforts. He led the “Drug Prevention Center” of Evia Prefecture and contributed extensively through writings, lectures, and media appearances on theological, social, and national topics. Elected Metropolitan of Corinth on October 15, 2006, he continued his dynamic ministry until his passing.
