Fights break out in Exarchia after a rally commemorating teenager's 2008 killing by police

Minor scuffles between protesters and the police broke out at Exarchia, central Athens, after an otherwise peaceful rally that marked the 13th anniversary of teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos' murder by the police had concluded shortly before.

Stones were hurled against the police from behind barricaded roads and garbage bins were set alight, with no detentions or arrests yet reported.

Meanwhile, some 500 people were gathered in an annual commemoration at the intersection of Messologiou and Tzavela streets where Grigoropoulos, 15, was shot and killed in 2008.

Roads in central Athens were closed earlier on Monday afternoon and in the evening, as two separate rallies were held and concluded peacefully, the first by students in the middle of the day and the later one by groups of anarchists and leftists.
