Despite diverting the flow from Grindavík, further fissures opened, causing lava to enter the town, burning buildings and cutting off electricity and water supplies.
This is “the most serious threat by eruptions in Iceland since January 1973”, with the President of Iceland pledging to overcome the tragedy: “We do not give up.”
More fissures will likely open up, and the lava flow could continue for many months.
