Greece will experience higher than average temperatures for the season until the end of July.
The director of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) explained the heatwave that Greece is experiencing, with the meteorologist giving detailed weather data for almost the whole of July.
"There is prolonged heat in our country in the second ten days of July. Although no extreme temperatures are predicted, the temperature will be 6 degrees above average for the season. Only the eastern areas affected by the meltemi, mainly the Cyclades and Northern Crete, will have a breath of fresh air," said EMY director Theodoros Kolydas.
"From Friday, the heat will be more noticeable as the meltemi weakens in many eastern regions, limited to the Eastern Aegean, the Eastern Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese," he added.
According to weather forecasts, Tuesday will be the second day with 40 degrees. The high temperatures will continue, with the only relief being strong winds.
Temperature will reach 37 to 39 degrees Celsius in the continental areas today and 40 degrees Celsius in the western continental regions.
It is 34 to 36 degrees Celsius in the Ionian islands, the eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese, and southern Crete.
From midday, clouds will develop in the western and northern continental regions, and in the highlands of Epirus and Western Macedonia. Local rains and possibly isolated storms will occur.
The detailed forecast of meteorologist Dimitris Ziakopoulos
Greece is still affected by the combination of high pressures in the Northern Balkans and low pressures in the Eastern Mediterranean, resulting in the maintenance of the N-NE current with an intensity of up to 7 Beaufort.
On Tuesday, afternoon rains or storms will likely occur in mountainous Epirus and W. Macedonia, and the temperature will reach 39 degrees on the mainland and 35 degrees in the island regions.
On Wednesday (10/7), sunshine is initially forecast, but in the afternoon, it will be locally cloudy in continental areas, and it is possible that rains and storms will occur in the mountains of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Winds will blow from north directions in the west 4 to 5 and in the east 6 to 7 Beaufort. The temperature will not change significantly.
The country will continue to experience approximately the same weather conditions on Thursday and Friday (11-12/7).
The risk of fire is very high in Argolis, Corinth, Lesvos, Kythira, Chios, Laconia, Boeotia and Evia.
