A Greek court on Wednesday acquitted two men accused of the 2021 murder of prominent crime journalist Giorgos Karaivaz.
Karaivaz, 53, was shot dead by two men on a motorbike near his home in Alimos, south of Athens, in April 2021. Known for his investigations and crime reports on STAR TV and other media, Karaivaz's murder was widely seen as a professional hit.
The seven-judge criminal court ruled that prosecutors had not proven the guilt of the two defendants, brothers aged 49 and 41, beyond reasonable doubt. Both men had pleaded not guilty to intentional murder charges.
Prosecutors suggested that Karaivaz's killing was linked to his impending revelations about organised crime networks in Greece. However, the court's majority decision found insufficient evidence to convict the accused.
