Fiona Douskou, a long-time Bayside resident and small business owner, has officially announced her candidacy for the upcoming local government elections on 14th September 2024. Running as the Liberal Party candidate for Ward 4 in Bayside Council, Fiona is eager to bring her passion for community service and business acumen to the local government.
Having lived in Bayside for 23 years, Fiona is deeply rooted in the community. Over the years, she has actively participated in various local organisations, including the Greek Orthodox Parish and Community of Kogarah. As a former Rotary Club president, Fiona has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at strengthening the community, such as fundraising for the Bayside Women’s Shelter.
“I have been thinking about entering local government for a number of years as I see it as a good way that I can give back at grass roots level to the fabulous community I live in,” Fiona shared with Greek City Times.
In addition to her community work, Fiona is also a small business owner, having recently launched her own cybersecurity business. Her experience as a businesswoman gives her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by local businesses, and she is determined to be their voice on the council.
“As a small business owner myself, I am passionate about giving small businesses a voice, and this is one of the many reasons that motivated me to run for local government,” she explained.
Fiona’s campaign is focused on several key issues that resonate with the Bayside community. She is advocating for safer public amenities, particularly at Carlton, Kogarah, and Rockdale train stations, where she aims to introduce more lighting and CCTV cameras to enhance security for families, the elderly, and women.
Housing is another critical issue on Fiona’s agenda. If elected, she plans to work towards developing better housing strategies that balance the need for new housing options with the preservation of Bayside’s natural and built heritage.
As part of the Liberal Party, Fiona is committed to ensuring that council services are delivered efficiently while maintaining strong budget management. She promises to fight against unnecessary rate rises, recognising the financial pressures many households face during the ongoing cost of living crisis.
With her dedication to the community, experience in business, and commitment to making Bayside a safer and better place to live, Fiona Douskou’s candidacy offers a promising vision for the future of Ward 4.
