The ancient allure of Athens is attracting modern-day digital nomads, drawn by the city's affordability and Mediterranean charm. A new report by International Workplace Group (IWG) places the Greek capital 25th out of 120 destinations in its "Work from Anywhere 2024" barometer.
The report highlights Athens' strengths, including:
- Attractive living costs: Low rent rates and affordable public transportation make Athens budget-friendly.
- Pleasant climate: The city boasts a Mediterranean climate with plenty of sunshine.
However, Athens also presents challenges for remote workers:
- Sluggish internet: Low internet speeds can hinder productivity.
- Cost of dining out: Food expenses can impact overall affordability.
Despite these drawbacks, Athens scored a respectable 65/100, demonstrating its growing appeal for location-independent professionals. This score was based on criteria such as climate, accommodation costs, transportation, food, and internet speed.
While Athens shines in areas like climate (8.5/10) and housing costs (9.5/10), it lags behind in internet speed (2.5/10). The report suggests that addressing this weakness could significantly boost Athens' attractiveness to digital nomads.
Budapest topped the ranking with 75/100, followed by Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro. Interestingly, emerging hotspots like Austin, Podgorica, Marrakech, and Valletta are also gaining traction among this mobile workforce.
With 84% of hybrid workers considering "workcations" and 74% prioritizing remote work options in their job searches, cities like Athens have a unique opportunity to attract this growing talent pool by further enhancing their infrastructure and catering to their needs.
