The Perfect Meal, directed by Alexandros Merkouris, takes us from Greece and Cyprus to Italy, Spain, France, England, Sweden, and the USA to reveal the secrets of the Mediterranean Diet.
The film’s main characters have dedicated their lives to understanding it and propose on the screen what, after their research, what they consider to be “the perfect meal” for our health and the planet’s health.
The participants
The documentary features, among others, Nikolaos Skarmeas (EKPA—Columbia University), Antonia Trihopoulou (Hellenic Health Foundation), Smaragdi Antonopoulou (Harokopion University), Walter Willett (Harvard University), Miguel Angel Martinez-Gonzalez (University of Navarre), Cecilia Samieri (INSERM), and award-winning chefs Marianna Livaditaki and Xavier Pellicer. Mary Giannakoulia (Harokopion University) is the scientific advisor.
The countries and co-producers behind the curtain
The film is a co-production between Greece, France, Spain, and Korea, produced by Anemon Productions, Yuzu Productions, Abacus, and Bassim Pictures. It was co-produced by ARTE, COSMOTE TV, ERT, RTVE, and RTS, with the support of Creative Europe, EKOME, CNC, KOCCA, and Atsas, and distributed by First Hand Films.
International awards
In 2024, the film was also presented at the Wonderful World—Science & Philosophy Festival and Green Montenegro Int. Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix as the “film of this year’s event that best approaches an environmental theme.”
It is preparing for its premiere in Bulgaria as part of the Sofia Documentary Film Festival on September 29 and October 5, and in Canada to Devour! The Food Film Fest on October 25th.
