Today we celebrate the 28 October 1940, when our whole nation, without any preparation and support, confronted and defeated the United Forces of Fascism and Nazism for the first time in European history.
Oxi Day commemorates the anniversary of the day that former military general and Prime Minister of Greece Ioannis Metaxas said “OXI” (NO) to an ultimatum made by Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, an ally of Hitler to allow Italian forces to occupy strategic locations in Greece or otherwise face war.
Greek citizens also shouted “OXI” as they ran through the streets of Athens to arm themselves and began preparing for war.
Oxi Day is now celebrated by Greeks worldwide. It honours Greek values, passion, and filotimo while remembering our ancestors who fought for Greece and freedom with all of their hearts and soul.
