Four individuals were arrested yesterday by officers of the Crime Prevention and Suppression Department of the Thessaloniki Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Directorate for violating antiquities laws after engaging in an illegal deep excavation.
Specifically, yesterday afternoon on the Old Thessaloniki-Kilkis National Road, three men aged 74, 71, and 57, along with a 48-year-old, were conducting an illegal, deep excavation within the premises of a business owned by the 74-year-old. They were using various tools and water pipes, acting on the 74-year-old's instructions.
The following items were seized: a truck; two pipes leading from a water tank to a water pump; a pipe leading to a makeshift contraption consisting of a reducer; two motors; two electrical panels with an approximately 80-meter cable; two drill rods; and numerous other pipes.
Charges for violating antiquities laws were filed against the arrested individuals by the Security Department of Oreokastro. They will be brought before the relevant judicial authorities.
