Wild Weather to Hit Greece: Rain, Snow, and Temperature Drop Expected from Sunday

Greece is bracing for a sharp shift in weather conditions starting Sunday, with meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas warning of rain, snow, and a significant drop in temperatures.

In a post on social media platform X, Kolydas noted, “Mild weather will persist until Saturday. However, by Sunday and Monday, we will see a rapid change with plunging temperatures, heavy rain, and snow in central and northern mountainous areas.”

Forecast Highlights:

Current Conditions:
Until Saturday, mild and unsettled weather will dominate, with temperatures unusually high for the season by 5–7 degrees Celsius during midday. Daytime highs are forecasted at 16–17°C in Athens, 15–16°C in the north, 17–18°C in most other regions, and up to 19°C in the south.

Storm Warnings for the Ionian:
Starting Wednesday, sporadic thunderstorms are predicted in the Ionian Sea. Strong localised phenomena may occur near Corfu, Paxos, and the Diapontia islands during the early morning hours.

Gradual Cooling on Saturday:
The weather will begin to shift Saturday, with rain expected in western and northern Greece, as well as the eastern and southern Aegean. Snowfall is anticipated in northern mountainous regions by the afternoon. Winds will vary, with westerly directions dominating in the west and south, and northerly winds picking up in the east and north.

Major Weather Shift Sunday and Monday:
Sunday marks the arrival of widespread showers and sporadic thunderstorms, particularly intense in western Greece. Snowfall is expected in central and northern mountainous and high-altitude regions. Winds will strengthen, reaching 7–8 Beaufort in some areas, particularly in the Aegean, where gusts may be severe.

Temperatures will drop significantly, with northern and central regions feeling the chill most acutely. In Athens, for instance, daytime highs of 16–17°C are expected to fall to 10–11°C, accompanied by strong northerly winds.

EMY Outlook:

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), the unsettled conditions on Thursday and Friday will lead to localised rain but no drastic changes in temperature. The real shift begins Saturday, culminating in Sunday’s widespread stormy weather.

Greeks are advised to prepare for the significant drop in temperature and stay updated on the latest forecasts as the weekend approaches.
