Over 16,900 Earthquakes Rattle Amorgos-Santorini Zone

According to the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), over 16,900 earthquakes were recorded between January 26th and February 14th in the zone between Amorgos and Santorini.

Two earthquakes were recorded in the maritime area between Amorgos and Santorini, one in the early morning hours and another yesterday evening, according to data released by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

The first earthquake, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 01:08, 23 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos. The second, a 4.2 magnitude quake, struck yesterday, Sunday, at 22:55, 18 kilometers south-southwest of the same village.

Both earthquakes were characterized as “weak” by the Institute.

Between January 26th and Friday, February 14th, over 16,900 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than one were recorded in the zone between Amorgos and Santorini, according to the Seismology Laboratory of NKUA. The University reported yesterday (Sunday) a “gradual decrease” in seismic activity in the region.
