Hellenic Navy Lieutenant Dies During Training Exercise, Investigation Underway

ATHENS — A 25-year-old lieutenant in the Hellenic Navy tragically lost his life on Tuesday during a training session with the Underwater Demolition Command, an elite special warfare unit of the Greek Navy, authorities confirmed.

According to preliminary reports, the officer collapsed while running during the exercise. Officials have stated that the incident does not appear to be related to any underwater activities associated with the unit’s specialized training.

Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed at the scene in an effort to revive the officer. He was quickly transported to Attiko Hospital in western Athens, where medical personnel worked to save him. Despite their efforts, the lieutenant was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The Hellenic Navy has launched an official investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. No further details, including the officer’s identity, have been released pending the investigation and notification of next of kin.

The Underwater Demolition Command, known for its rigorous training and high-risk operations, is one of the Greek Navy’s most elite units, specializing in maritime special operations, including underwater demolition and reconnaissance.
