Three people are dead and many others injured after a man deliberately drove into a crowd in Melbourne's Bourke St Mall. Up to 20 others are injured and many are in serious condition.
A man, who is now reported to be a 26-year-old Greek Australian has been arrested, after a car struck pedestrians at the Elizabeth St end of the mall. Reports have been surfacing this afternoon in main stream media and social media, claiming he is of a Greek background and has been known to police for other offences- however this has not been confirmed.
Victoria Police say that the indicent is thought to be connected to a stabbing that took place earlier on Friday, after police were searching for a man believed to be involved in a family stabbing in Windsor. It is reported he stabbed his brother and had taken a woman hostage before going on a rampage. A media conference by police has now confirmed he has extensive family violence history, mental health and drug issues and has come to the attention of police on many occasions with assaults and was also charged over the course of last weekend.
The suspect was caught and shot and is now under police guard in hospital, however he is not in a serious condition.
