Kidnapped Cretan businessman rescued after 6 months

Greek police in Crete have rescued local businessman Michalis Lebidakis, who has been held by kidnappers for six months.

Authorities said the 54-year-old was freed in a raid on Monday at an industrial site outside the city of Rethymno. Reports claim eight people have been arrested so far.

Public Order Minister Nikos Toskas said Lebidakis was “tired and shaken but in good health,” adding that no ransom payment had been made.

Lebidakis’ father also told Greek reporters the family were relieved and anxious to see him.

The businessman who is well known in Crete, runs a plastics company and was snatched at gunpoint on March 30 this year. His kidnappers were holding him for ransom.
