Archaeologists near Bulgaria’s southeastern border with Greece have made a remarkable discovery—a nearly 7-foot statue of the ancient Greek god Hermes. This unexpected find occurred amidst the excavation of an ancient Roman sewer in the deserted city of Heraclea Sintica, established by King Philip II of Macedon between 356 and 339 B.C.E. Heraclea Sintica was abandoned following a catastrophic earthquake in 388 A.D.
