The European Union has rushed aerial firefighting support to Greece as wildfires continue to burn across the country. Firefighting planes from Croatia, Cyprus, France, and Italy, along with helicopters from Slovenia and Slovakia, have been deployed through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
France, Italy, and the Czech Republic are sending aid to fight the Attica fires, including a Super Puma helicopter, two Canadair firefighting aircraft, and 75 firefighters with 25 fire trucks. Support from Spain and Türkiye is expected soon.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen has praised Greece and France for their significant support in combating the wildfires in Bulgaria. Through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, both countries have contributed to the firefighting efforts, showcasing European solidarity. In her statement on X, von der Leyen highlighted the collective action of 556 firefighters from 12 countries and a rescEU fleet equipped with 28 planes and 4 helicopters, underscoring the importance of unity in addressing such crises.
