Dimitris Basis has brought Greek music to non-Greek students in an intimate, classy, refined, polished and professional performance.
Completely self taught, musician and songwriter George Karantonis composed his first song at age 7, penning the poignant lyrics; “Xenos ekei, xenos kai edo, patrida nisi, to yiofiri ego” or “A stranger there, a stranger here too, homeland homeland, the adopted son”. GCT speaks to George about his amazing life’s journey from humble childhood, to becoming a member of famed band ‘Moda Blue’, his Opening Ceremony performance at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the song ‘Australia’ he composed at the request of late Archbishop Stylianos and, more recently, his historical rendition of the Greek Anthem as part of 200th Greek Independence Day celebrations.
The full Greek National anthem, Hymn to Liberty, 158 stanzas long, was performed live for the first time in Australian history, in a symphonic arrangement lead by the acclaimed conductor George Ellis.
