On May 7, 2025, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens bestowed the title of Honorary Doctor upon Archbishop Makarios of Australia in a grand ceremony attended by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and Archbishop Ieronymos II. Rector Gerasimos Siasos lauded Makarios as “an inspired hierarch” whose work revitalizes the Greek Orthodox community in Australia through education, social outreach, and theological leadership. In his keynote, Makarios addressed the challenges of digital media in shaping ecclesiastical and democratic consciousness, cementing his role as a global voice for Orthodoxy and Hellenism.

World Greek Language Day, celebrated on February 9, marks the death of national poet Dionysios Solomos. The School of Modern Greek Language at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) has taught over 37,000 students from around the globe since 1999, offering both in-person and online Greek language courses. With innovative teaching methods, the school continues to promote Greek culture and language worldwide, with over 1,200 students participating in programs like Erasmus+ and Epicur.
Ilektra Varanaki, a student at the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia’s Greek Language School, has been awarded the first Gonis Gardiakos Scholarship. This scholarship honors the late Bill Gonis OAM and supports young learners in continuing their Greek language education through high school. Congratulations to Ilektra on her achievement!
Students from the Greek Community of Melbourne Schools excelled at the MGTAV Greek Public Speaking Festival, showcasing their skills and commitment to Greek language education at the annual event held on October 24 in Northcote.
In a collaborative effort initiated by the Greek Community of NSW and Dr. Helen Vatsikopoulos, Mr. Kostas Politis, President of the Greek Community of Tashkent, visited Sydney and Melbourne. During his Melbourne visit, he engaged with the Board of Directors of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), discussing mutual initiatives and future collaborations.
