This week marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of ‘Ulysses’ by Irish writer James Joyce, widely regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century. A committed philhellene. Joyce insisted that the cover of ‘Ulysses’ should match the blue of the Greek flag which hung in his Paris apartment.

Completely self taught, musician and songwriter George Karantonis composed his first song at age 7, penning the poignant lyrics; “Xenos ekei, xenos kai edo, patrida nisi, to yiofiri ego” or “A stranger there, a stranger here too, homeland homeland, the adopted son”. The full Greek National anthem, Hymn to Liberty, 158 stanzas long, was performed live for the first time in Australian history, in a symphonic arrangement lead by the acclaimed conductor George Ellis.
