Just hours after TikTok was temporarily shut down in the U.S. due to a federal ban, the platform resumed service following a statement from President-elect Donald Trump on Truth Social. Trump announced plans to issue an executive order on his first day in office to pause the ban, giving TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, more time to secure an approved buyer. This announcement allowed TikTok to continue operating for over 170 million American users without facing penalties.

Italian Court Halts Meloni’s Migrant Return Program
In a setback for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s new migration policy, an Italian court has blocked the deportation of 12 asylum seekers to Albania. The group, originating from Egypt and Bangladesh, arrived at the Albanian port of Shëngjin on Wednesday from the Italian island of Lampedusa aboard an Italian military vessel. This ruling comes just two days after the program’s launch.
The judges determined that returning the migrants to their home countries would be unsafe, necessitating their return to Italy. This decision has sparked outrage from Meloni’s party, who took to social media to denounce the ruling, alleging that “politicized magistrates” are seeking to “abolish Italy’s borders.”
This ruling evokes the recent trial of former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who faces kidnapping charges for refusing the disembarkation of 147 migrants from an NGO vessel in 2019. Salvini’s trial, which carries a potential six-year prison sentence, highlights the tension between Italy’s elected government and elements within the judiciary regarding migration control.
The court’s intervention in Meloni’s program raises concerns among those who see a pattern of judicial opposition to government efforts aimed at curbing mass migration into Italy and the EU.
British sun-seekers planning a Turkish getaway this summer might notice a difference on the streets – a lack of stray dogs. A controversial new law aiming to control the country’s stray animal population has sparked protests and raised concerns that it could impact tourism.
A 10-foot statue of the Greek god Poseidon erected near the beach in Progreso, Yucatan, Mexico, has been effectively “closed” and faces potential removal after complaints from local Maya indigenous groups. The statue, depicting Poseidon rising from the sea with his trident, has been deemed culturally insensitive and lacking proper environmental permits.
A Greek court convicted a woman for launching a defamatory campaign against a prominent Greek Orthodox Archbishop based in Australia. Vasiliki Morali was sentenced to eleven months in prison, suspended for three years, for repeated online slander and insults targeting His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
Speaking at the presentation of the Justice Ministry’s action plan, Mitsotakis said the new legislation will help reduce the backlog of cases and make the judiciary more efficient.
