Villagers from Arla in western Achaia were evacuated by authorities on Monday night as new wildfires hit the region, developing on two fronts in the area of Santomeri.
Authorities sent a bus to the village to pick up the elderly and other vulnerable residents, which will be transferred to nearby villages.
The regional governor of Western Greece Apostolos Katsifaras told Greek media that a large firefighting force is trying to stop the flames from reaching the houses, adding that strong winds are blowing in the area reaching 6 on the Beaufort scale.
At the second front, firefighters on the ground and three firefighting aircraft are operating in Eleohori and Tzailo to protect the nearby communities. Policemen have cordoned off the streets around the two fronts to facilitate the movement for the firefighting vehicles and water tankers.
