Discovery of ancient Greek brothel offends Turkish sponsors

By 8 years ago

A team of archaeologists in Southern Turkey lost funding support after their discovery proved to be an ancient Greek brothel.

“When those who are thinking about sponsoring us ask about the purpose of the structure in ancient times, they change their minds when we say it was a ‘love house’ [brothel] or a ‘toilet,’” said Professor Hüseyin Sabri Alanyalı, the archaeologist who is heading a team of 60 experts at the site.

The ruins of the ancient Greek brothel were discovered in the city of Side, once home to a Hellenistic city dating back to the 7th century BC in Antalya.

“Our budget from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has fallen drastically. It has dropped by two thirds compared to last year. That’s why we’re obliged to postpone some of the work we want to do.”

“If we can find a sponsor, we want to complete our work at the Temple of Apollo, the Temple of Athena and around the basilica,” said Professor Alanyalı, hinting at concluding this season’s work by August 15, due to financial difficulties.
