Tsipras and Lagarde discuss IMF role for Greece

By 7 years ago

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke to the head of the IMF Christine Lagarde about Greece’s progress in changing the fiscal policy mix requested by the Fund after the completion of the current program.

Lagarde reiterated the IMF’s position regarding the issue of the Greek debt, saying that specific measures need to be proposed and agreed on restructuring Greece’s public debt, for the fund to participate, even if those measures are to be implemented later.

Tsipras took the opportunity to speak with Lagarde, ahead of her visit to Germany to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel, noting that it is Germany’s turn to take specific measures concerning the targets for primary surpluses after the end of the current program and providing debt relief.

IMF spokesperson Gary Rice said talks on debt will be able to start after the completion of the second program review adding that the Fund’s mission will return to Athens next week to focus on the fiscal reforms Greece needs to make.
