By 7 years ago

The Athens and Epidaurus Festival has been running for over 60 years and is the annual “must see” arts and cultural event when visiting Greece over summer.

The Festival programme is filled with an array of music, theatre, dance and visual arts that takes place at various venues around the city, including Piraeus 260, the Ancient Agora of Athens and the Onassis Cultural Centre. There will also be performances at two ancient amphitheatres of Odeon Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Epidaurus, which are a definite highlight.

It is set to include a mix of classic and modern performances and this year’s programme has been described in the Greek media as “youthful, alternative and political.”

The year 2017 will also see the launch of one extra stage and is under the artistic direction of Vangelis Theodoropoulos, who aims to highlight the work of new Greek artists and promote it on an international level, while also achieving co-productions with internationally acclaimed artists and groups in the fields of theatre and dance, plus regional theatres and institutions in Greece, while expanding the Festival’s scope and audience by opening up to the city and organising various educational activities.

With an emphasis on Hellenic cultural heritage be sure to make your way to this renowned Festival, which was founded in 1955 and can be enjoyed from 22nd May – 19th August, 2017.
