Firefighters battle wildfire south of Athens

By 7 years ago

Dozens of firefighters battled a large bush fire south of Athens on Monday, with no inhabited areas in immediate danger, Greek authorities stated.

The blaze broke out in the Athens Riviera area of Kalyvia, about 30 kilometres south of Athens and quickly spread through vegetation due to the strong winds.

The fire service said that by late Monday, the situation had improved considerably and the flames remained far from any homes.

Some 70 firefighters on the ground, backed up by more than 30 fire engines and water tankers, took part in the operation. During daylight hours, five water-dropping helicopters also assisted in putting out the flames.

Authorities have told residents to remain alert as strong winds are still sweeping the area.
