Young and talented Greek athlete Emmanouil Karalis has broken the world record in the U20 pole vault with a leap of over 5.78-metres in the second day of the Pan-Hellenic Teen Track Championship, which took place on Sunday in Athens.

He surpassed the previous record of 5.75m, which was set by Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, a year ago, allowing Karalis to reach a lifetime best by eight centimetres.

Eleventh at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade last March, 19-year-old Karalis has also secured the qualifying mark for the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham from 1-4 March, next month.
